SUMMARY:An Evening with Author Tawseef Khan
DESCRIPTION:Jamila’s life feels hectic and out of control. Then a breakdown of sorts forces her to seek change!\n\n\nAs we celebrate South Asian History Month\, join us at Oldham Library with author Tawseef Khan as we dive into his new book Determination. Jamila Shah is twenty-nine and exhausted. An immigration solicitor tasked with running the precious family law firm\, Jamila is prone to being woken in the middle of the night by frantic phone calls from clients on the cusp of deportation. Working under the shadow of the government’s ‘hostile environment’\, she constantly prays and hopes that their ‘determinations’ will result in her clients being allowed to stay. \nWith no time for friends\, family or even herself (never mind a needy partner)\, Jamila’s life feels hectic and out of control. Then a breakdown of sorts forces her to seek change – to pursue her own happiness while navigating the endless expectations that the world seems to have of her\, and still committing herself to a career devoted to helping others. \nBio:TAWSEEF KHAN is a qualified immigration solicitor and holds a doctoral degree from the University of Liverpool\, where he examined the fairness of the British asylum system. He is also a graduate of the creative writing programme at the University of East Anglia\, where he received the Seth Donaldson Memorial Bursary. His fiction has appeared in Lighthouse and Test Signal: a Northern anthology; his non-fiction in the New York Times\, The Face and Hyphen. His debut non-fiction book Muslim\, Actually was published by Atlantic in 2021. He lives in Manchester. \nRefreshments will be provided.

SUMMARY:Silent Book Club at Oldham Library
DESCRIPTION:What is Silent Book Club? \n\n\n\nWe meet fortnightly\, downstairs at Oldham Library\, from 17:30 – 18:30. (There will be signs around the event.) Bring your own book and read in companionable quiet. It’s like an Introvert Happy Hour! \n\n\n\nWhat do I bring? \n\n\n\nBring your current read\, or choose one when you get here. We read together quietly with no expectation of talking. \n\n\n\nDo I have to read? \n\n\n\nYou can read anything in any format\, or bring along homework\, writing\, art or craft – anything you can work on quietly! Fancy a chat? \n\n\n\nFeel free to stay afterwards and socialise – but there’s no pressure to do this\, and the club will officially end after an hour of reading.

SUMMARY:In Conversation with Peter Kalu and Muli Amaye
DESCRIPTION:Black History Month\n\n\nA chance to hear from two authors as part of our Black History Month events. Pete Kalu’s new book Act Normal is a memoir filled with stories\, from the real to the surreal. His latest book is Act Normal (HopeRoad October 2025)\, shortlisted for the Jhalak Prize 2026. He received a Society of Authors Travelling Scholarship Award in 2024 to help complete this work which is “impressively experimental\, thoughtful and challenging.” For many years he ran a Trinidad-inspired Carnival band called Moko Jumbi and the trickster character of West African and Cariibbean folklore has been an abiding influence on his art. \n \nMuli Amaye is a novelist and short story writer.
