Hold The Front Page: Chronicling Oldham Life
October 22 @ 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Drop-in session, Wednesday 22 October, 1pm-4pm, Oldham Archives, Ascroft Street, Oldham OL1 1XF – opposite Billingtons.
The Oldham Evening Chronicle was Oldham’s local printed newspaper from 1854 until 2017. Unlike many local newspapers, it was published daily and owned continuously by a family firm right up until its last edition. When the printing ceased and the office closed, the Chron’s archive was moved to Oldham Archives. The archive includes an extensive collection of photographs as well as back copies of the newspaper and associated publications, and records documenting how the Chron was run.
The archive contains a wealth of information about the history of Oldham and its residents. Our team here at Oldham Archives are keen to understand how a broader range of groups and individuals might use the collection. We know the Chron includes articles about events in the town, community life, adverts for shops and businesses, and we’re keen to talk to the people behind these stories. We want to know how important the Chron was (or wasn’t) to you. If you could read an edition of the Chron from the past, what date would it be and what would you be looking for? If you’d like to help, please join us between 1pm-4pm on Wednesday 22 October for an informal drop in session. You’ll be able to look at back copies of the Chron, have a tour of the archive strong room and share your views!
