The latest exhibition at Gallery Oldham celebrates historic links between India and the UK
Gallery Oldham is delighted to present Indian Perspectives, a vibrant new exhibition. This thought-provoking display brings together more than 100 works by two talented artists, Tony Phillips and Jasmir Creed, who explore these connections through their own personal stories and identity. Indian Perspectives highlights how migration, cultural exchange, and interconnected histories continue to shape the identity of both nations today.
Liverpool-born artist Tony Phillips presents socially engaged drawings that examine the impact of British rule on India while celebrating the cross-cultural creativity resulting from post-Independence Indian migration to the UK.

Tony Phillips is a Black British artist who was born in Liverpool. He trained at Lancaster Art College and is primarily a painter and printmaker whose socially engaged work often focuses on issues of colonialism and its aftermath. Tony exhibits across the world and his work is represented in many public collections including Gallery Oldham and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
London-based artist Jasmir Creed draws on her Anglo-Indian heritage to create striking, colourful oil paintings. She explores her own family history of migration and themes of belonging, alienation and identity. Jasmine, a PhD candidate at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, has exhibited in London and across the North West, as well as Chongqing in China and Istanbul in Turkey.
Councillor Peter Dean, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, said: “We are proud to welcome this inspiring exhibition to Gallery Oldham. Indian Perspectives is a celebration of the deep cultural ties between India and the UK and also a chance for us all to reflect on the stories, traditions and creativity that connect our communities. I would encourage everyone to come along and be part of this shared journey of discovery and celebration.”

The exhibition opens Saturday, 27 September with a special launch event held at 2pm. It is a chance to meet both artists and hear them speak about their work and inspirations. The event is free and open to all, with no booking required.
Indian Perspectives is on display at Gallery Oldham from 27 September 2025 until Saturday 3 January 2026.
